New Delhi: In her first public appearance after an attack on her, Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday stated that she won’t be afraid. “I assure you that your CM Didi will not be afraid, will not get tired, will not lose,” Gupta said while addressing an event organised by the Association of Wholesale Readymade Garment Dealers in Gandhi Nagar Market, Shahdra.

“Till Delhi gets its rights, she will keep fighting with you. It is my vow to continuously fight with you,” she added.

Ruckus at her event, 2 detained

Meanwhile, a ruckus erupted during Gupta’s first major public event since the attack, prompting police intervention and the detention of two men accused of creating the disturbance. The incident took place while the Chief Minister was addressing the gathering at the launch of ‘Vastrika’, a programme aimed at local development in the garment hub of east Delhi.

During her speech, Gupta assured residents of major infrastructure upgrades, including new water and sewer lines, parking facilities and toilets in areas lacking basic amenities. “Mother Yamuna will start appearing better and more beautiful with time. There will be water lines and sewer lines all across the Yamunapar. Wherever there is a problem of parking, multiple parking lots will be built. Wherever there is no toilet, toilets will be built there,” she told the crowd.

This appearance came just two days after a shocking security breach when Gupta was attacked during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her Civil Lines camp office on August 20. The assailant, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, was arrested on charges including attempted murder.

Following the attack, Gupta had largely remained at her official residence under heightened security, with CRPF commandos taking over her inner security cordon. The Gandhi Nagar event was therefore seen as a significant move to resume public engagement.

After the Gandhi Nagar programme, the Chief Minister was scheduled to attend the grand finale of ‘Ideathon’, an event organised by the Delhi industries department at Ashok Hotel in Chanakyapuri later in the evening. The police maintained strict security arrangements throughout the day in view of the recent assault and Friday’s disruption at the garment hub event.
