Bhubaneswar: Several parts of Odisha are likely to encounter heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy falls and thunderstorm activity till August 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
The IMD also stated that a fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts around August 25. The system is expected to bring a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rain in north and interior Odisha after August 27.
The weather agency has issued red, orange and yellow warnings for different districts during the period as heavy rainfall, thunderstorm activity and lightning may continue in the state till the morning of August 27.
A red warning has been issued for Sundargarh till the morning of Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy falls and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the district.
Similarly, orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda.
Yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was issued for the districts of Deogarh, Angul, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Balasore, Bhadrak, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied with gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Bargarh, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Sonepur, Balangir, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
On August 23-24, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.
Thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coast and over North Bay of Bengal on Friday and Saturday.
