Bhubaneswar:The Commissionerate Police has apprehended two persons from Delhi in connection with the fatal hit-and-run incident in Bhubaneswar’s Patrapada on Rakhi Purnima.
The arrested individuals are Rohan Ranjan Raut, the SUV owner, and his associate Soham Raj Tripathy. The vehicle involved in the accident was earlier found abandoned at Jatni area and seized.
According to sources, Soham works as a manager at a private bank, while Rohan is the son of a liquor trader from Patia in Bhubaneswar. The duo fled to Manali in Himachal Pradesh soon after the incident. After a short stay in the hill station, they hid in Delhi to evade arrest.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain involvement of others in the case.
On August 9, a speeding SUV crashed into a woman, who was crossing NH-16 at Patrapada along with her eight-year-old daughter and two-year-old son. The accident took place when they were returning home after celebrating Raksha Bandhan at a relative’s place. The girl died on the spot, while the mother, identified as Revati Roul, succumbed to injuries at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, two days later.
Revati was the wife of home guard Manas Roul.
Eyewitnesses had then said two SUVs were allegedly racing each other at high speed, leading to the accident. Both vehicles fled without stopping to help the victims.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 8 lakh for the bereaved family.
