Cuttack: A woman, who had allegedly attempted self-immolation by setting herself on fire at a village in Odisha’s Salepur area, succumbed to burn injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
The women from Kankreilo village in Salepur area of Cuttack district had suffered critical burns on Tuesday after the alleged self-immolation bid following some dispute in the family.
Sources said the statement of the woman was recorded during treatment, which has provided important details for the ongoing investigation. While preliminary findings indicate that the incident was a case of self-immolation, the exact circumstances that led to the incident would be ascertained after a thorough probe.
According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Salepur, Biranchi Narayan Pati said, the woman died on Wednesday night after battling for life and investigation is being conducted based on the report filed by her paternal family.
It may be noted that Odisha has reported an alarming rise in such cases recently as girls and women are resorting to the extreme step of self-immolation.
