Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain is likely to subside in Odisha from Friday as the low-pressure area is expected to move west-northwestwards across East Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours.
“The low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and neighbourhood moved slightly westnorthwestwards & lay over north Chhattisgarh & adjoining East Madhya Pradesh at 8.30 am. It is likely to move west-northwestwards across East Madhya Pradesh during next 24 hours,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its midday bulletin on Thursday.
According to the weather agency, the system along with the active monsoon trough, running through Chandbali, is likely to cause heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Balasore districts on September 4.
Thunderstorm along with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph is also likely at one or two places in Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Deogarh, Sonepur, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
While there is no heavy rain warning thereafter, thunderstorm activity may continue in the state till September 8.
On September 5, thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati.
Similar weather conditions may prevail in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Sundargarh districts on September 6-7-8, it added.
