Bhubaneswar: Heavy rain is likely to lash several parts of Odisha as a low-pressure area is set to form over the Bay of Bengal in 12 hours and it may intensify into a depression on Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area is likely to form over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours.
Moving nearly westwards, it is very likely to concentrate into a depression over northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off south Odisha- north Andhra Pradesh coasts on September 26. It is very likely to cross south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 17 morning, the IMD said in a special bulletin.
This weather system is likely to trigger heavy rain several parts of Odisha in next few days. The weather agency has issued yellow and orange warnings for different districts.
In next 24 hours, heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, and Gajapati. The IMD has issued a yellow warning for these districts.
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind may occur at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.
On September 26-27, the IMD issued orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph for some places over the districts of Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Similarly, yellow warning was issued about heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph in some places over the districts of Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Balasore, Khurda, Kalahandi, Nayagarh Kandhamal, and Nabarangpur. Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind may also occur in Mayurbhanj.
Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph may occur at one or two places over the districts of, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Balangir.
On September 27-28, heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may occur at one or two places of Nabarangpur where an orange warning was issued.
Similarly, yellow warning of heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph was issued for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput districts.
As squally weather is likely to prevail and sea condition will remain rough very rough, the weather agency has advised fishermen not to venture into the north and central Bay of Bengal and along the Odisha coast till September 28.
