Bhubaneswar: The well-marked low-pressure area over northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal is expected to concentrate into a Depression off South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed on Friday.

The system is likely to cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts on Saturday morning, it added.

Under its influence, Odisha is likely to experience extremely heavy rainfall on Friday.

A red warning of very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy spells accompanied by thunderstorm/ lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph has been issued for the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, and Kalahandi.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Puri, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Kendrapada districts.

There is also a warning of isolated heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning  and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph for one or two places in Boudh, Sonepur, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore. Isolated heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning  and gusty surface wind speed reaching reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.

The IMD has also issued a nowcast warning of light to moderate rain or thundershower along with lightning for a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Angul, Deogarh, Puri, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Khurda (including Bhubaneswar) till 5 pm. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.

The weather agency has forecast a decrease in the intensity of downpour the following day.

On September 27, heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may continue at one or two places in Nabarangpur district.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may also occur in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kalahandi and Nuapada. There is also a warning of thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph for one or two places in Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.

Thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph may also occur in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Kandhamal districts. Similar weather condition with gusty surface wind speed reaching 20-30 kmph gusting to 40 kmph is likely in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj districts.

On September 28, thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph gusting to 50 kmph may continue at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar.

Squally weather may also prevail with wind speed 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph along & off Odisha
coasts and over Northwest & Central Bay of Bengal from September 26 to 28.

The national forecaster further stated that heavy rain may resume in districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak on October 2, with the likely formation of a fresh low pressure area over North and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.

According to Director of SOA University’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) Sarat Sahu, a cyclonic circulation may form over west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts on October 1. It may intensify into a low pressure on October 2 and move in northeast direction towards north Odisha-West Bengal coasts, he said.
