Chandigarh: A YouTuber named Wasim Akram has been arrested by the Haryana Police on charges of spying for Pakistan. He was allegedly involved contact with Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) over the last three years and also supplied them with SIM Cards.
This development comes months after YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra was arrested over allegations of sharing sensitive information with Pakistan.
According to police, Akram, a resident of the Kot village in the Palwal district of Haryana, shared videos about the history of Mewat on YouTube. The police allegedly discovered multiple incriminating WhatsApp chats on Akram’s phone, with some deleted messages. The cyber cell is working to recover them.
The police in Palwal had arrested a Pakistani spy Taufiq a week ago. It was during his Interrogation that Akram’s name came up. The police then came to know that the YouTuber came in contact with Pakistani agent Danish in 2021 while applying for a visa to the neighbouring country.
Incidentally, Danish was the same agent who used Jyoti and others, getting them to spy for Pakistan. A member of the diplomatic staff, he was later expelled by India.
While Akram’s family denied that he travelled to Pakistan, several facts emerged during his interrogation that point to his cross-border links, the police claimed. Officials said that both Akram and Taufiq communicated with Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Pakistan High Commission via internet calls.
Palwal SP Varun Singla has directed the crime branch and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. The Intelligence Bureau is also coordinating with the police, and authorities have indicated that more arrests are expected in the coming days.
“Taufiq, who lives in Alimev village in the district, was arrested on September 26. It was Taufiq who had been sending sensitive information to Pakistan since 2022. He disclosed Akram’s name during interrogation. During investigation, it came to light that both were in touch with the Pakistan High Commission and ISI,” an official said.
