Mumbai: Veteran actor Satish Shah, best known for his roles in the 1983 film ‘Jane Bhi Do Yaaron’ and 1984 sitcom ‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’, passed away on Saturday due to kidney related illness. He was 74.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news on social media and posted: “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor, Satish Shah has expired a few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital, where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry. Om Shanti.”
Shah had starred in the extremely popular 2004 television show ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’, where he played the role of Indravardhan Sarabhai opposite Ratna Pathak Shah. He won the Indian Television Academy Awards in 2005 and 2017 in two categories for this show. Shah also won the Indian Telly Awards in 2006 for ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’.
His most memorable film was ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ for which he bagged the Filmfare Award in 1985. He also acted in films like ‘Main Hoon Naa’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’.
A Kutchi Gujarati from Mandvi, he studied at the St Xavier’s College before joining the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). In 2015, he was appointed a member of the FTII society.
Shah shot into fame with ‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi’ that was directed by Kundan Sinha and Manjula Sinha. In this sitcom, Shah ended up playing 55 different characters in 55 episodes. He also starred in Zee TV’s 50-episode ‘Filmy Chakkar’ opposite Ratna Pathak Shah.
Shah is known to have acted in nearly 250 films and numerous television shows in his career, spanning nearly 47 years. He was also a judge of the ‘Comedy Circus’ laughter contest.
