Mumbai: After receiving threats from banned Khalistani group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) for touching Amitabh Bachchan’s feet on the game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 17’, Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh shared a cryptic post on Saturday.
Following the release of a promo from Big B’s KBC, where Diljit is seen touching Amitabh’s feet as a mark of respect, SFJ issued a warning to the singer, threatening to disrupt his concert in Australia scheduled for November 1.
Amid the controversy, Diljit took to his Instagram handle to share a cryptic post, which hints at a clarification for his act.
In his post, the singer explained that his participation in the game show was driven by social concerns, not for self-promotion.
The singer wrote in Punjabi, “Na Mai Kisey Film Di Promotion Lai Geya c, Na Kisey Ganey Di Promotion Lai. Punjab Floods Lai Geya C..Ke National Level Te Gal Hove.. Te Loki Donate kar Sakan. (I hadn’t gone there to promote any film or song. I went for the Punjab floods… so that the issue could be discussed at the national level and people could come forward to donate.)”
Diljit’s guest appearance on KBC 17 was intended to draw attention to flood relief efforts in Punjab.
For the unversed, the statement issued by the SFJ group alleged that Big B had played a role in inciting violence during the 1984 riots, in which over 30,000 Sikh men, women, and children were killed across India.
“By touching feet of Bachchan, the man whose words orchestrated Genocide, Diljit Dosanjh has insulted every victim, every widow, and every orphan of 1984 Sikh Genocide,” Pannun was quoted as saying by News18.
The Khalistani group claimed that Dosanjh’s gesture of touching Bachchan’s feet on the show was an “insult to every victim” of the riots.
Anti-Sikh riots broke out a day after then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
