Hermosillo (Mexico): A number of children were among those killed in a massive explosion and fire at a store in Hermosillo, northwestern Mexico on Saturday. Local authorities have confirmed that 23 people died and 11 others were injured in the tragic incident.
The country’s president Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences and announced emergency assistance for victims’ families.
“My heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives,” she posted on X.
She confirmed that government support was being mobilized and instructed the interior minister to coordinate with Sonora state authorities and ensure that victims’ families and the injured receive immediate help.
Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed the devastating toll through a video statement.
“At this moment we have registered 23 people killed, 11 injured. Sadly a number of the victims we’ve found were minors,” Durazo said.
Medical teams at local hospitals are treating survivors with burn injuries and smoke inhalation. Authorities said the situation remains under investigation as rescue operations continue.
It is still not known how the fire started or what caused the explosion. An attack has been ruled out though. Investigators are expected to examine whether a gas leak or electrical malfunction triggered the explosion.
Firefighters worked through the night to control the blaze and prevent further casualties.
Emergency responders and police have cordoned off the area, while rescue teams continue to search the debris for any remaining victims. Officials have assured that updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
The explosion has shaken Mexico’s Sonora state, prompting national mourning and calls for stricter safety measures in commercial establishments.
