Sydney: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has married Jodie Haydon in a private ceremony at his official residence, The Lodge in Canberra — becoming the first serving Australian PM ever to wed while in office.
Why this wedding is historically unique
Of the 31 people to date who have served as prime minister of Australia, only three — John McEwen, Julia Gillard and Albanese himself — began their term without a spouse.
In the case of McEwen, he assumed office as a widower and did not marry until after he left politics.
In the case of Gillard, although she had a long-term partner while in office, the two never married.
That means no former Australian leader had previously formalized a marriage during their time in office — until now.
Thus, Albanese’s wedding is a landmark: it breaks a decades-long pattern and adds a new personal milestone to the public record of Australia’s prime ministers.

The ceremony
The wedding, described as intimate and private, took place at The Lodge with close family and friends in attendance. Haydon walked down the aisle escorted by her parents; their five-year-old niece Ella acted as flower girl, while the couple’s dog — a cavoodle named Toto — served as ring bearer.
They exchanged vows written by themselves and were married by a celebrant from New South Wales’ Central Coast. After the ceremony, the newlyweds walked out to Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”.
Haydon wore a gown by Sydney designer Romance Was Born, while Albanese donned a suit from MJ Bale. The witnesses were Haydon’s brother and Albanese’s cousin.
All expenses for the wedding were privately borne by the couple. They plan to honeymoon within Australia beginning next week.
This wedding isn’t merely a personal milestone — it marks a rare moment where a sitting national leader publicly affirms a long-term relationship with a legally recognised commitment. As noted by political commentators, such events are very uncommon among world leaders.
