190 Delegates For Odisha’s First-Ever State Pain Conference At KIMS Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Odisha University of Health Sciences Vice-Chancellor Dr Manas Ranjan Sahoo on Saturday inaugurated the first-ever ‘Annual Odisha State Pain Conference’ at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS).

The theme of the two-day conference, which is being jointly organised by the Department of Pain Medicine and PG Department of Anaesthesiology, KIMS under the aegis of Indian Society for Study of Pain (ISSP), Bhubaneswar branch.

The two-day conference, themed ‘Shaping the Future of Pain Medicine in Odisha and Beyond’, aims to bring together leading clinicians and experts to exchange knowledge, share innovations and collectively advance the field.

Highlighting the crucial role of anaesthesiologists in surgical success, Dr Sahoo stated that “behind every successful surgeon, there is a good anaesthesiologist.”

Dr Sahoo said pain management is the key to positive surgical outcomes and assured that OUHS will soon introduce dedicated courses on pain medicine in Odisha. He also announced plans to start PhD programmes for doctors under the OUHS umbrella and urged experts to conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes on pain management.

KIMS Anaesthesiology department head Dr Amrita Panda said the conference encompasses all aspects of pain management and focuses on holistic and evidence-based approaches for better patient outcomes.

ISSP Odisha Chapter president Dr Ritish Roy noted the “phenomenal” response to the first edition of the conference, and said it reflects the eagerness of doctors across Odisha to learn every aspect of pain management.

KIMS Medical Superintendent Prof. M R Behera said that pain requires a multimodal treatment approach, involving physical, psychological and medical interventions.

ISSP national president Dr Krishna Poddar expressed her commitment towards strengthening pain medicine in India, and urged KIMS to initiate a DM course in Pain Management.

According to Dr Rajendra Sahoo, organising secretary of the conference and Consultant, Pain Medicine department, KIMS, 190 delegates have registered for the conference, including participants from Nepal.

He announced that KIMS is prepared to run fellowship programmes in pain management.
