Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has reaffirmed its long-term vision of operating 15 fully functional airports across the state by 2047, as part of the Vikshit Odisha 2036–47 roadmap, officials announced after the 4th Meeting of the High Power Committee on Aviation held on Saturday.
These airports would significantly elevate Odisha’s regional, domestic, and international air linkages, they added.
The meeting, which was chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, also underscored the need for a dedicated policy to promote the establishment of Flight Training Organisations (FTOs) in Odisha, aimed at developing a strong talent pool for the aviation industry.
It also discussed fast-tracking the operationalisation of the upcoming Aviation Training Centre at Dhenkanal as a centre of excellence for pilot training and capacity building, and formulating a comprehensive State Aviation Policy to streamline regulations and draw private investment.
In addition, the committee considered recognising aviation manufacturing and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul) facilities as a thrust sector under the Industrial Policy Resolution to strengthen Odisha’s aviation value chain and draw new industries to the state. Deliberations also included the development of a new Destination Policy to boost general aviation and improve air access to remote and underserved regions through small-aircraft services.
A detailed review of ongoing airport and airstrip projects, including the proposed Greenfield International Airport at Puri and enhanced air connectivity to Rourkela and Jharsuguda, was also conducted.
The Chief Secretary stressed the importance of inter-departmental coordination, timely project execution, and proactive planning to position Odisha as a leading aviation hub in eastern India and unlock new horizons for tourism, trade, and investment.
Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg, Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport, Usha Padhee, Commissioner cum Secretary Tourism Balwant Singh along with other senior officials, attended the meeting, which focused on advancing Odisha’s aviation ecosystem in line with the Vision of Vikshit Odisha 2036–47.
