Cuttack: Chaos erupted at SCB Medical College and Hospital (MCH) in Odisha’s Cuttack when a section of a false ceiling in the old Medicine ward suddenly collapsed on Wednesday, injuring an elderly patient.

According to sources, the mishap took place around 3 pm on the first floor of the aging Medicine ward, where a chunk of the ceiling plaster detached and fell on a patient, striking him on the head, in the presence of his family members. Medical staff promptly attended to the victim, administering immediate first aid before transferring him to another ward for further treatment. His condition is stated to be stable.

The patient has been identified as Narayana Prasad Das, a resident of Baghamari in Khurda district. He was undergoing treatment after a fall in his blood sugar. Pramod Kumar Das, the victim’s son, accused the authorities of negligence following his father’s head injuries in the incident. “They haven’t stitched his wounds yet,” he stated.

Though the exact reason behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained, it is being suspected to have occurred due to potential structural wear in the older sections of the facility.

The SCB authorities are yet to issue a statement on the incident, which has sparked concerns amid Rs 4,474.49 crore makeover plans for the hospital to meet AIIMS standard.
