Mumbai: Indian film production and distribution company Eros International Ltd has served a Rs 84-crore legal notice to the makers of ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ for apparently promoting their film as a spiritual sequel to ‘Raanjhanaa’.
Alleging trademark and copyright infringement, Eros approached the Bombay High Court against director Aanand L Rai and his production house Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP for illegally using the goodwill of its 2013 hit film ‘Raanjhanaa’.
The company further claimed that Dhanush and Kriti Sanon’s ‘Tere Ishk Mein’ was deliberately promoted as a ‘spiritual sequel’ to ‘Raanjhanaa’ without the consent of the production house, Times Entertainment reported.
The legal suit has also named Super Cassettes Industries (T-Series), writer Himanshu Sharma and Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP.
“The Plaintiff is the producer and exclusive owner of all intellectual property rights in the highly successful Hindi language film Raanjhanaa including without limitation… copyright, registered trademark rights in Raanjhanaa, character rights including in Kundan Shankar and Murari, and remake, prequel and sequel rights,” the suit states.
“Murari, portrayed by Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, in both films, is a sharp-witted friend whose perspective adds conscience to the plot… The Respondents’ unauthorised reproduction and commercial exploitation of these characters… constitute a clear violation of the Applicant’s exclusive rights.”
Eros has claimed that ‘Tere Ishq Mein’ is misleading audiences. “The Defendants have made unauthorised use of the Applicant’s Rights / Applicant’s Film/brand/mark ‘Raanjhanaa’ for the promotion… of the Impugned Film titled Tere Ishk Mein.”
A cease-and-desist notice was issued on July 25, 2025, followed by reminders in September.
