New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday met Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in his office here along with ‘SIR-affected’ families and party leaders.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has been at loggerheads with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls exercise in the state, had sought time from Kumar last week.

Mamata, accompanied by TMC leaders including MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee, took along several voters who had lost family members because of uncertainty over SIR.

Hours before the meeting with CEC, Mamata lashed out against Delhi Police, alleging that Bengalis were being “tortured” in the Capital.

Mamata rushed to Banga Bhawan, the guest house of West Bengal government, to take note of the “excesses” of Delhi Police on her people.

“I am going to Banga Bhawan to see our people and the atrocities of the Delhi Police. When the Home Minister comes to Bengal, we give him the red carpet. But when we come to Delhi, you give us the black carpet. Please restrain yourself from the atrocities, from the torture of the Bengal people who have lost their lives. The people of Delhi don’t know what’s happening in Bengal. I just now got the information, and I didn’t even change my clothes,” Mamata said hours before the meeting.

The voters who TMC had taken along to Delhi were reportedly being accommodated at Banga Bhawan.

The SIR exercise has led to a major political confrontation in West Bengal, with TMC questioning ECI for the manner in which it was being conducted and also alleging that it was biased and motivated by partisan interests.

Party general secretary and Mamata’s nephew Abhishek had earlier met the CEC with a group of MPs and made demands. Not satisfied with ECI’s response, now the chief minister herself has travelled to Delhi.
