Malkangiri: In a major success in the battle against left wing extremism (LWE), a hardcore Maoist cadre carrying a reward of Rs 21 lakh surrendered before the Superintendent of Police in Malkangiri district of Odisha on Wednesday.
The surrender of Sukram alias Suresh marks a major setback for Maoist activities in the region and is being hailed as a success of the state’s sustained efforts to weaken extremist networks.
Police said Sukram was a senior cadre of the Maoist organisation and had long been on the radar of security forces. He surrendered voluntarily before the Malkangiri SP, signalling his decision to abandon the path of violence. His surrender is seen as part of the growing trend of Maoists giving up arms in response to intensified security operations and rehabilitation initiatives by the government.
Sukram carried a bounty of Rs 21 lakh, underscoring his importance within the Maoist hierarchy.
The Malkangiri SP said Sukram’s surrender reflects the effectiveness of ongoing anti-Maoist strategies. Authorities highlighted that the government’s rehabilitation policy offers surrendered cadres opportunities to reintegrate into mainstream society, including financial assistance, vocational training, and livelihood support.
The SP assured that Sukram will be provided with all benefits under the state’s surrender and rehabilitation scheme. According to police sources, Sukram was an Area Committee Member (ACM) of the Maoist outfit and had been actively involved in organising and executing extremist activities across Odisha and neighboring Chhattisgarh.
