Berhampur: A Class X girl student allegedly died by suicide after appearing for the English paper in High School Certificate (HSC) examination in Berhampur on February 21, sources said on Monday.
According to sources, the deceased was a student of Berhampur Telugu Girls’ School and was appearing for the examination at VV Giri Government Girls’ High School. A chit was allegedly found in her possession near the examination centre main gate and the woman invigilator warned her sternly against using any unfair means during the examination.
After returning home, the girl became withdrawn, remaining silent and avoiding interaction with her family. Later that evening, while alone, she allegedly took her own life.
Her family members claimed public humiliation and shame over the alleged cheating incident may have driven her to the extreme step. They have lodged a complaint with Bada Bazaar police station.
The girl’s maternal uncle Balaram Sahu, quoting her classmates, told the media: “My niece reportedly took a cheat sheet to her English exam on Saturday, discarded it at the school gate upon seeing teachers, but was spotted, accused of malpractice despite denying it, and publicly threatened with a 3–4 year exam ban. This could have led her to die by suicide that evening around 6 pm.”
Meanwhile, the headmistress of school Chandini Panda denied the claims, asserting that no student was caught engaging in malpractice or cheating during the examination on that day. “A total of 378 students are appearing for the exam here. They are from the Government Girls’ High School and Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir, Gosaninuagaon. No one was caught for malpractice. We have not received any such complaints yet,” she said, adding that CCTV footage from the examination centre will be reviewed.
3 Matric Students Injured On Way to Exam Centres In Odisha
Balasore/Angul: Three Class X students were injured in separate road accidents on Monday while on their way to appear for the Matric exams in Balasore and Angul districts.
In Balasore, two students, Mamata Majhi and Jyotiprava Majhi of Abhana Nodal High School, were struck by a motorcycle near Bishnupur Nodal High School Centre while heading to their exam centre. They were rescued by locals and rushed to Gopalpur Community Health Centre for treatment. As Jyotiprava’s condition worsened, she was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Police have detained the rider involved in the accident.
Another Class X student, Mili Barik from Kampatkela village, was seriously injured when an unidentified vehicle rammed into her bicycle as she was on her wat to the Government Girls High School examination centre in Pallahara area of Angul district. She suffered severe head injuries and was immediately shifted to the Community Health Centre at Pallahara for treatment.
Unfortunately, all 3 students missed their crucial examination due to the road mishaps.
