Vrindavan (UP): At least 10 people lost their lives and several others are missing after a boat carrying tourists, all from Punjab, capsized in Yamuna river in Vrindavan on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred near Kesi Ghat when the boat, carrying more than two dozen people, moved into deeper waters and hit a floating pontoon, PTI reported.

According to local authorities, a pontoon bridge had recently been dismantled because of rising water levels, leaving some pontoon drums in the river. The boat apparently collided with one of those pontoons.

District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh initially reported six fatalities. Rescuers later recovered four more bodies, taking the toll to 10, district administration officials confirmed.

ADG Agra Zone Anupama Kulshreshtha said around 25-27 people were on the boat when it turned over. “Rescue operations are underway… 13 people have been saved in the rescue operation. 10 people were found dead. Search operations are ongoing for three to four more people.”

Medical authorities at the Vrindavan hospital said six men and four women died.

State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with around 50 local divers, were deployed for rescue operations.

The tourists were part of a 150-strong group of pilgrims who went to Vrindavan from Ludhiana and Muktsar in Punjab.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Aditya Nath condoled the tragic deaths and directed officials in Mathura district to expedite relief and rescue operations, and ensure the best possible treatment for those rescued and shifted to hospitals.
