Bhubaneswar: Amid the prevailing sultry spell and heatwave conditions, the mercury soared to 42°C in Bhubaneswar at 1.30 pm on Thursday.
The state capital had recorded 41.2°C the previous day as Jharsuguda emerged as the hottest place in India, logging a blistering maximum temperature of 44.6°C, 3.4 degrees above normal.
The India Meteorological Department has warned of heatwave conditions at isolated places in the districts of Balangir, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar and Khurda on April 23 and Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, Keonjhar, Angul and Khurda on April 24.
Hot and humid conditions may continue in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts till April 25. Balangir, Sambalpur, Kandhamal may experience warm nights on April 25-26.
The weather agency further stated that thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) may occur in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Rayagada and Kandhamal on April 23; Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Rayagada on April 24; and Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur on April 25.
Similar weather conditions with wind speed of 40 to 50 kmph may prevail in the afternoon/evening hours at one or two places in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada and Kandhamal on April 26; Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Gajapati on April 27; and Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri on April 28-29.
The day temperature across the state may fall by 2-3°C after 3 days, it added.
