Nayagarh: A family in Odisha’s Nayagarh town had a miraculous escape in early hours of Friday when a trailer, propelled by a rear-end collision, smashed through their compound gate and rammed deep into their residence, causing extensive structural damage.
The incident took place around 3:30 am on National Highway 57 near Gadual Square.
According to sources, a speeding dust-laden truck slammed a trailer from behind. The trailer veered off the road under the impact of the collision, broke the main gate of Yudhistir Khanda’s house located adjacent to the highway and crashed inside.
Family members described being jolted awake by what felt like an earthquake. “We were sleeping when it felt like an earthquake. We rushed downstairs and saw the trailer had crashed into our house. Since the trailer blocked the entrance, we climbed to the roof and saw the wreckage, with the Hyva truck positioned behind it on the road,” a member of the Khanda family recounted.
No one inside the house sustained injuries despite severe damage to the property, including broken pillars, widespread cracks on the walls, and impact to a car parked inside the compound. They then called an ambulance assuming people might have been injured in the accident and informed Nayagarh town police. “Police arrived two hours later,” Khanda’s wife told a local news channel.
Both drivers involved in the collision were injured and admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Odagaon for treatment.
The family alleged that such accidents are occurring because people are parking their vehicles on the road, leaving little space for vehicles to pass.
Fire services personnel later arrived at the scene and removed the trailer, which was then seized by police along with the truck. An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the accident.
