Angul: A 24-year-old newly-married man was found hanging from a cashew tree near Machhakuta playground under Chhendipada police limits in Angul district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Manas Behera.
According to police and family sources, Behera lost significant sums of money while playing online games, triggering repeated conflicts at home. Family members revealed that Behera’s father, Balia Behera, had deposited Rs 2.5 lakh in his son’s bank account for purchasing a plot of land. However, the entire amount was allegedly squandered on online gaming. He lost another Rs 30,000 given to him for buying a motorcycle in the same manner. These financial losses reportedly led to frequent disputes, straining family relationships.
Behera went missing around 1 pm on Wednesday following a quarrel at home. His family searched extensively but could not locate him.
Locals found his body hanging from the tree around 6 this morning and informed the relatives. Chhendipada police reached the spot on getting information, recovered the body, and sent it for postmortem. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
The incident is particularly heartbreaking as Behera had got married just 15 days ago.
