Bhubaneswar: As the sweltering heatwave continued to intensify across Odisha amid soring temperatures, hot and humid weather left people distressed in the coastal belt, including state capital Bhubaneswar.
Amid searing heat, the temperature touched 41.2 degrees Celsius in the industrial town of Jharsuguda at 11.30 am, while recorded 40.6 degrees Celsius. Hirakud followed closely recording 40.2 degrees Celsius.
State capital Bhubaneswar recorded a temperature of 37.2 degrees Celsius at 11.30 am. Coupled with the high mercury level, relative humidity stood at 60 per cent in the capital city, making life miserable for residents.
Earlier, Bhubaneswar residents woke up to yet another hot and humid morning as the city continued to reel under oppressive weather conditions. At 5.30 am, the temperature was recorded at 30.6°C with a high relative humidity of 88%, pushing the heat index to a dangerous 42°C, according to the India Meteorological Department.
This combination of high temperature and humidity has made the weather feel significantly hotter, causing discomfort for residents across the capital city.
Over the past five days, Bhubaneswar has experienced consistently high temperatures and humidity levels with little respite during the night. On May 22, the city recorded its highest heat index of 44°C when the temperature touched 31.4°C with 84% humidity. On May 21, despite a slightly lower temperature of 29.6°C, humidity soared to 90%, resulting in a heat index of 39°C. On May 19 and 20, temperatures hovered around 30°C with humidity levels between 86.5% and 88%.
