Berhampur: Police have registered a case against a minister’s nephew in connection with the alleged suicide of a woman student of a private engineering college in Golanthara area near Berhampur in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The case was filed a day after the 21-year-old woman, studying Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA), was found hanging under mysterious circumstances in a room in her college hostel on Saturday.
Police sources said a case has been registered against Biswajit under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to the abetment of suicide following a complaint lodged by the family members of the deceased.
According to reports, Biswajit Jena is the nephew of Odisha’s Steel & Mines and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena.
As per the complaint lodged by the deceased student’s maternal uncle, Biswajit was also a final-year BCA student at the same college. He was reportedly in a relationship with the girl student.
The deceased girl’s family members and the fellow villagers have alleged that she was murdered. The held Biswajit responsible for her death and urged the police to arrest him in connection with the incident.
The deceased’s family members and the villagers also threatened to launch an agitation and gherao the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) if the minister’s nephew is not arrested within 24 hours.
However, the Minister, his nephew Biswajit and family are yet to respond to the allegations made by the relatives of the deceased.
Meanwhile, police have seized the deceased student’s laptop, mobile phone, and CCTV footage from the hostel premises as part of the investigation. The student was rescued from the college hostel on Saturday morning and rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. However, doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
Following the complaint, police reached the college campus and questioned the victim’s friends and acquaintances to gather further information about the circumstances that led to her death.
The post-mortem examination of the body has been conducted and scientific and forensic teams inspected the spot of the incident, while further investigation in the case is currently underway, said Berhampur SP Shravan Vivek M.
