Kolkata/New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will be a signatory to the memorandum that the INDI Alliance proposes to submit to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant.

Veteran MP Saugata Roy confirmed on Wednesday that the TMC supports the memorandum on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and other election-related issues, further noting that the party will be a signatory to it.

The TMC has time and again raised serious objections to the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the implementation of SIR in West Bengal, he told ANI.

“TMC will be a signatory to this memorandum to the Chief Justice of India. TMC has been complaining about the functioning of the Election Commission and the implementation of the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) for a long time. We raise serious objections to the Election Commission’s role in implementing the SIR in West Bengal and later in conducting the elections. So naturally, we support any move against the Chief Election Commissioner,” he said.
The INDI Alliance, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on board, wrote a joint letter to the CJI hief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant on Tuesday.

The Alliance managed to get signatures of the DMK and AAP in the joint letter after hectic talks, sources told ANI.

During the day, CPI national general secretary D Raja strongly asserted that the ECI must maintain its neutrality, while also calling for the BJP to understand that the ECI is a “constitutional body”.

Raja, while speaking to ANI, highlighted that elections in states such as West Bengal, Bihar, and Mahrashtra have directly contradicted the ECI’s mandate of holding unbiased elections.

“The BJP should understand that the Election Commission is a constitutional body. Election Commission should ensure the right to vote of all eligible citizens and ensure free and fair elections. But what we witnessed in Bihar, West Bengal and Maharashtra tells a different story. Several states have made complaints, and this is a serious matter,” he said

He also emphasised the need to protect the constitutional neutrality and independence of the ECI.

“EC’s constitutional neutrality and independence must be protected. For this, the parties in the INDIA bloc have taken up this issue with the Chief Justice of India. Let us see what the Chief Justice is going to do,” he said.
