Chennai: After months of delays, legal hurdles, piracy leaks and intense speculation, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally been certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, cleared with a runtime of 3 hours and 3 minutes, has received an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate, ending a nearly seven-month-long certification delay that had kept its release on hold.
Although the CBFC has uploaded the film’s certificate on its official website, the final cut list is yet to be made public.
‘Jana Nayagan’ is likely to be actor-turned-politician Vijay’s final film.
As per reports, the film may hit theatres on July 23 or 24. The official confirmation is awaited.
‘Jana Nayagan’ was initially slated for release on January 9, ahead of the Pongal festivities and just months before Vijay’s first electoral contest.
The film was submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025.
However, instead of receiving clearance within the usual timeframe, it became caught in an unusually lengthy certification process.
The examining committee first recommended a series of modifications. After the producers made the suggested changes and resubmitted the film, the makers said they were informed that it was suitable for a U/A certificate.
However, the process took another turn when a member of the examining committee reportedly filed an internal complaint, claiming that certain scenes could hurt public sentiments.
The certification process came to a standstill, and the makers were advised to refer the film to the revising committee.
As the certification process continued to drag, KVN Productions moved the Madras High Court on January 6, seeking directions to expedite the CBFC’s decision.
The production house argued that the prolonged delay had put the film’s planned release at risk and was causing significant losses.
Despite the legal intervention, the impasse remained unresolved for weeks, with no immediate breakthrough.
The film continued to remain in limbo as the certification process showed little sign of moving forward.
Helmed by H Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ features Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain.
