New Delhi: Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has reacted to speculation surrounding his alleged American citizenship.
Reports claiming that the actor had acquired US citizenship in 2022 first surfaced in May, but Diljit had not publicly spoken on the issue.
During the Instagram Live interaction, a fan brought up the issue while suggesting that Diljit should apply for a US Green Card after his film ‘Satluj’ was removed from streaming platform ZEE5.
Although the singer did not directly answer the question about his citizenship, he responded with a witty reply, joking that his reply would “become news.”
“I’ll take a card and colour it green. I’m not saying anything. Sab chhodke ye news ban jayegi (People will leave everything and make headlines out of this). It doesn’t work like that. The drama of the world will never end. But I believe everyone should be allowed to travel to any country without a visa. The whole world should become one. I am fine, but it isn’t possible like that, is it?” Diljit responded.
In another live session, a fan jokingly asked Diljit to speak to US President Donald Trump and help everyone obtain American citizenship.
Diljit laughed and said, “What do you all think of me? I am just an artiste. How can I ask him to solve citizenship issues? His daughter follows me, but I have never spoken to her either. I never ask anyone for favours. If something is meant to happen, it happens. If it isn’t, then it isn’t.”
Earlier, a report by The Indian Express claimed Diljit obtained US citizenship four years ago, and that his wife, Sandeep Kaur, is an American citizen.
The report also stated that the singer had listed a five-bedroom bungalow in an upscale California neighbourhood as his residential address.
‘Satluj’, formerly titled ‘Punjab 95’, is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated the alleged illegal cremation of nearly 25,000 unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994.
The film was originally intended for a theatrical release but remained stuck in a prolonged certification battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for nearly four years.
It eventually premiered on ZEE5, only to be removed from the platform two days after its release.
Helmed by Honey Trehan, the film features Diljit in the lead, alongside Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan in key roles.
