New Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday convicted former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain and four others in the murder case of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 riots in northeast Delhi.
Of the 11 accused, Additional Sessions Judge Praveen Singh of the Karkardooma Courts convicted Tahir, Nazim, Kasim, Javed and Anas, while acquitting six others accused for lack of evidence.
The court found Tahir guilty under IPC sections 302 (murder), 153A, 147, 148, 149, 365 and 188, related to murder, promoting enmity between different religious groups, rioting and assault or criminal force used to dishonour a person.
However, the criminal conspiracy charge against him was dropped.
Hussain broke down in court after the verdict was pronounced by the judge.
The case pertains to an FIR lodged at Dayalpur police station by Ankit’s father, Ravinder Kumar.
As per the complaint, Ankit returned home from work on February 25, 2020, before stepping out to buy groceries. When he did not return, his family began searching for him.
Failing to find him, a missing person’s complaint was registered.
His body was later recovered from a drain near Chand Bagh Pulia. He was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital but was declared brought dead.
The post-mortem report found Ankit had sustained 51 injuries caused by sharp-edged weapons and blunt force.
