New Delhi: India’s first hydrogen-powered train is all set to roll out.

In a significant milestone in the government’s push towards cleaner and greener transportation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the maiden hydrogen train service, which will run between Jind and Sonipat.

India will be the third nation in the world to operate hydrogen-powered trains.

The initiative reflects the Prime Minister’s vision of reducing dependence on diesel and petrol while promoting cleaner fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels, said BJP national secretary Om Prakash Dhankar.

Fifty school students will be selected to travel on the hydrogen train on its first ride, from Jind to Sonipat. They will return to Jind on the same train, and will be accompanied by a team of teachers.

Northern Railway has organised educational programmes involving school students to mark the special occasion.

The Railway administration has written to the district Education Officer of Jind, requesting that drawing and essay competitions be organised in five schools among students of classes VII and VIII.

The themes for the competitions are – ‘What Would My City’s Railway Station Look Like?’ and ‘What Would I Do To Build A Developed India?’

The winning students will be honoured by PM Modi during the inauguration ceremony.

During his visit to Haryana, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate newly-built Amrit Bharat railway stations at Jind and Narwana, and lay foundation stone for several development projects across the state.
