Bhubaneswar: Rainfall activity may intensify in Odisha this week as a new weather system builds over the region, bringing heavy downpours during Bahuda Yatra of the Lords of Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.
According to senior meteorologist Sarat Sahu, a cyclonic circulation may form on July 22 over Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and the adjoining Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to intensify further into a low pressure over the same resgion by July 24.
Rainfall activity is predicted to pick up significantly across the state from July 22 to July 25. “Rainfall will increase across the state from July 22 through July 25. While North Odisha is likely to experience heavier spells, coastal and southern districts, including Ganjam, Nayagada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri—will also receive rain due to the prevailing wind flow,” Sahu noted.
Puri may also experience rainfall, which could impact the upcoming Bahuda yatra festivities.
Currently, an active monsoon trough line is driving showers and thunderstorms across several districts, with heavy rainfall reaching up to 100 mm in some areas.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued yellow warnings for several districts for 2 more days. Heavy rain may continue in the districts of Sundargada, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj on July 21, and Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Sundargada, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj on June 22. Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind (30-40 kmph) is also likely in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada on these two days.
