Changing your health insurance company may appear difficult at first glance, but it really isn’t. The 2011 circular of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) allows you to transfer the current medical insurance policy to a different insurer.

With portability, you can switch insurers without losing the benefits that you have already gained, like shorter waiting periods in case of pre-existing conditions. This means you do not have to take out a new policy and start afresh.

When Should You Consider Porting Your Health Insurance Policy?

Switching health insurance might seem complicated, but it can be useful in the following situations:

  • Need for Greater Coverage: You may need to switch insurance providers if critical illness cover or other needed benefits are not included in your current plan.
  • Claim Settlement Issues: If an insurance provider consistently denies claims or pays out claims too slowly, it’s a good idea to look for a more dependable provider.
  • Price Differentials: You may want to switch insurance providers because of competition in the insurance market and new providers in the market, or a different plan through your current provider, which has more benefits and a lower price.
  • Hidden Clauses: If you discover unclear terms that affect your claims or coverage, it’s better to move to a more transparent insurer.
  • New and Better Products: Insurers often launch new products with improved features. If one suits your needs better, consider porting.
  • Poor Service: If your current insurer’s service doesn’t meet expectations, it may be time to change.
  • Need for Specialised Services: If you require specific coverage or services not available with your current insurer, you can port to one that specialises in those areas.

Steps to Port Your Health Insurance Policy

Here’s a quick guide to help you change your health insurance provider smoothly while keeping your existing benefits:

1.     Review Your Current Policy

Check your current health plan’s sum insured, coverage, and benefits used. Make sure it still meets your healthcare needs.

2.     Know the IRDAI Rules

Start the portability process at least 45 days before renewal. The new insurer must offer coverage and a sum insured equal to or higher than your current policy.

3.     Choose a New Insurer

Compare plans on trusted platforms like the IRDAI website or visit insurers’ official sites. Look for better coverage, service, or pricing.

4.     Apply for Portability

Submit the portability and proposal forms with these documents:

  • Current policy copy
  • Renewal notice
  • Medical history
  • ID and address proof

5.     Wait for Approval

Your current insurer will share your claim and medical history within 7 days. The new insurer must decide within 15 days, accepting or rejecting with a valid reason.

6.     Get Your New Policy

Once approved, pay the premium to activate your new policy. All previous benefits and waiting period credits will continue without interruption.

Documents Required for Porting Health Insurance

Here are the documents generally needed:

  • Portability form from your current insurer
  • Duly filled and signed proposal form (with health details of all insured members)
  • Copies of previous policies
  • Claim history of previous policies
  • KYC documents, including:
    a) Health declaration form
    b) Address proof (Aadhaar card or other valid proof)
    c) Age proof (PAN card)

Additional documents may be required depending on the new insurer’s policy. For Aadhaar-related processes, you may also need to complete Abha Card Download Online to link your health records seamlessly.

Benefits of Porting Health Insurance

Porting your health insurance can offer several advantages:

  • Higher Sum Insured: Your existing sum insured and bonuses are carried forward, giving you increased coverage.
  • Retained Benefits: All benefits from your previous policy continue in the new one.
  • Possible Lower Premiums: Due to market competition, you may get the same coverage at a lower premium.
  • More Transparency: You are able to change to an insurer with more transparent terms and conditions.
  • Customisable Plans: You have the flexibility to adjust your coverage, add extra options, or update nominees.
  • No Extra Waiting Periods: You do not have to complete any waiting periods for pre-existing conditions.
  • Better Claim Experience: You can have your claims settled quicker and easier when you switch insurers.
  • Higher Service Standards: You can select an insurer recognised for better client assistance and service.

Challenges of Porting Health Insurance

While porting has many advantages, it also has a few challenges:

  • Limited Window: You can only do this during the renewal period, not any other time.
  • Higher Premiums: Some insurers can charge a higher premium for other benefits.
  • Policy Restrictions: You can only switch between similar policy types. Most major plan changes are not permitted.
  • Loss of Group Benefits: You might lose group plan benefits if you leave a group policy and go to an individual plan.

Guidelines for Health Insurance Portability

Before starting the porting process, keep these IRDAI rules in mind:

  • Porting at Renewal: You can only port your health insurance during the renewal of your policy.
  • Response Time: The new insurer must acknowledge your portability request within 3 days and decide on your application within 30 days after receiving all necessary documents.
  • Eligible Insurers: You can transfer your policy between general or specialised insurance providers.
  • Rejection Possibility: Portability is not guaranteed. If the new insurer rejects your proposal, you can continue with your current policy.
  • Continuous Coverage: Ensure your current policy does not lapse before porting. Continuity is crucial for a successful porting process.
  • Eligible Policies: Both individual and family floater policies are eligible for porting.
  • Waiting Period Adjustment: The waiting period covered under your previous policy will be deducted from the new policy’s waiting period. If you’ve already completed the waiting period for pre-existing diseases, you’ll receive immediate coverage from the new insurer.
  • Underwriting Rules: The new insurer can evaluate your application based on its underwriting norms. If you don’t have pre-existing conditions or claims, the premium may remain low. Otherwise, they may increase the premium or deny the portability request.
  • 45-Day Notice Period: You must apply to port your policy at least 45 days before your current policy expires and inform your current insurer.
  • Like-to-Like Policies: Only similar types of policies can be ported. For instance, a basic reimbursement plan can be ported to another reimbursement plan, but not to a critical illness plan.

Hence, understanding how to switch your health insurance provider without losing benefits helps you make the most of your health coverage. You may come across better plans, improved services, or more affordable premiums. Knowing the right process will ensure that all your existing benefits stay protected when you move to a new insurer.

During medical emergencies, uninterrupted coverage gives you peace of mind and financial security. Therefore, it is essential to stay updated on the IRDAI portability regulations and take the necessary measures to change insurers without compromising your health and financial security.
