Bhubaneswar: Following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, authorities at Rengali Dam in Odisha’s Anugola district opened another gate to discharge excess floodwater into Brahmani River basin on Saturday.
Earlier, water was being discharged through gates No. 8 and 10. However, as the Brahmani River continued to swell, authorities opened gate No. 9 to regulate the rising inflow and maintain the reservoir level.
Officials said around 4,619 cubic metres of water per second is flowing into the reservoir at present, while nearly 5,200 cubic metres per second is being discharged through the three gates and the power channel.
While the maximum water storage level of the reservoir is 123.5 metres, its current water level stands at 122.72 metres.
The opening of an additional gate has raised concerns about a further rise in the water level in the river downstream. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as continued rainfall in the upper catchment could lead to increased inflow into the reservoir and potentially intensify the flood situation in the lower reaches of the Brahmani River.
