Ranchi: The Jharkhand government is scheduled to meet students protesting alleged discrepancies in recruitment examinations today, with the agitation continuing in Ranchi and leaders preparing to surround Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence on August 20.

The protesting students have agreed to attend a meeting with a government delegation at the State Guest House at 2 pm today. The talks come a day after the agitation by candidates of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) completed 23 days.

Protesters Accept Invitation

Devendra Nath Mahto, one of the student leaders who has completed 15 days of a hunger strike, said he expected the proposed dialogue to lead to a constructive resolution. He also demanded lasting changes in the education system to prevent students in future from facing similar difficulties.

“On the 15th day of the hunger strike, the situation is extremely critical and in its final phase. Yesterday, the government called for talks. We hope that this dialogue will yield a positive outcome and bring about such reforms in the education system that the coming generations will not have to endure the pain, struggle, and hardship that many young people are facing today,” Mahto wrote on X.

He said the government must focus on enduring reforms instead of offering a temporary solution, as reported by The Statesmen.

“We want education to be such that no student has to struggle so much for their rights. There should be a permanent reform in the education system, the benefits of which will be passed down from generation to generation,” he said.

Officials Visit Protest Site

Ahead of the meeting, Additional District Magistrate (Law and Order) Dhananjay Kumar visited the students and conveyed the administration’s invitation to a delegation accompanied by its legal adviser.

“We came here to meet the students and see if they are doing fine. We come here every day,” Kumar told reporters.

He said the meeting would be held with the same ministerial group that had previously interacted with the protesters.

“A delegation of students, accompanied by their legal advisor, has been invited for a meeting tomorrow at 2:00 PM. We have come to request the students to attend this meeting. The discussion will take place at the State Guest House at 2:00 PM. On behalf of the government, the same group of ministers will be present. The discussion tomorrow at the State Guest House will be with the ministers. We have come to extend this invitation,” Kumar said.

Leader Voices Doubts

The students have agreed to join the talks, but questions over the government’s intent remain.

Student leader Ravindra Paswan said the delegation would participate in the discussions while expressing uncertainty over whether the authorities were prepared to act on their complaints.

“The SDO visited us recently. We have received an offer for talks, and we will be holding discussions with the government delegation tomorrow… The government has indeed offered talks, and we will attend them, but I fail to understand whether the government is genuinely serious about our demands. Is their intent truly clear? I feel it is not, though perhaps they will clarify it tomorrow,” Paswan said on Sunday.
