Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued orange and yellow warnings for several coastal and adjoining districts of Odisha till around 1.30 pm on Sunday.
Moderate rain and lightning may occur in the districts of Bhadrak, Kataka, Jagatsinghpur, Jajapur, Kendrapara, Khordha and Puri.
Notably, state capital Bhubaneswar has been experiencing incessant rain since last night.
A yellow warning has also been issued for 13 other districts, where light-to-moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected at a few locations over the same three-hour window. It covers Kendujhar, Koraput, Malkanagiri, Nuapada, Balangir, Baragada, Baleshwar, Gajapati, Rayagada, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj and Ganjam districts.
Weather officials have cautioned the public to remain vigilant, as sudden squalls, intense lightning flashes, and heavy downpours could lead to temporary waterlogging and reduced visibility. Residents across the affected regions—particularly those in low-lying areas—are strongly advised to monitor local weather updates closely and avoid venturing into open spaces or standing under isolated trees during thunderstorm activity.
This comes amid extremely heavy rainfall alert for Odisha on August 30 under the influence of a low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal & adjoining West Bengal-north Odisha coasts, which is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards across north Odisha-Gangetic west Bengal during the next 24 hours. The monsoon trough is also passing through the centre of this system.
Very heavy rainfall may also occur in the state from August 31 to September 1. The system may also dump Heavy rain in the state on August 30 and September 2-3. Isolated thunderstorm, lightning & gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph) is also likely from August 30 to September 1. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over in Odisha during August 30-September 2.
