Kendrapada: In an alarming development, the headmaster of a government school in Odisha’s Kendrapada allegedly consumed alcohol during duty hours, locked the school’s main gate and fell asleep.
Around 35 students of classes I to V of Ambura Government Primary School, under Kurujanga Gram Panchayat in Derabish block, were ‘trapped’ as their headmaster Sunakar Nayak locked the main gate, PTI reported.
After realising that they had been locked in, the frightened children raised an alarm. Local residents rushed to the school and rescued the children after unlocking the gate.
The incident triggered outrage among parents and guardians
As the incident and photographs of the alleged misconduct went viral on social media, the students’ guardians demanded stern action against the headmaster.
Derabish Block Education Officer Madan Mohan Kar said the allegations against the headmaster were substantiated during a departmental inquiry.
He added that such conduct by a school head was highly unbecoming of a member of the teaching profession.
Nayak has been suspended.
The school has 35 students and two teachers. Nayak was the only teacher present on Tuesday.
