New York: A ‘gift’ of $5,000 to every adult American from the US President!
Just one condition — Republicans will have to win both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, scheduled on November 3.
Donald Trump’s big and unique offer to woo voters was made during a speech at the first-ever Republican convention in the middle of a US presidential term.
It was Trump’s biggest announcement of the evening at American Airlines Center in Dallas, drawing thunderous applause from the crowd.
The President, however, did not provide any detail of how it would work out or be funded.
All that he said about the $5,000 payout was that the money would have to be spent in the US.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump stated.
“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money. We don’t want you going to China, to Germany. You got to spend the money in the United States of America,” he said without elaborating how the spending would be monitored.
There are nearly 270 million American adults, which means a $5,000 payout would cost the US government around $1.3 trillion!
Democrats dismissed Trump’s offer as an “empty promise” while others questioned whether such a pledge was legal or feasible, reported BBC.
Vice-President JD Vance linked the massive payout proposal to the revenue that the US has raised from tariffs on imported goods.
“I don’t think it’s a controversial idea,” Vance said.
With the war against Iran intensifying in recent weeks, the Strait of Hormuz blockage has resulted in fluctuations in oil prices worldwide, with Trump facing pressure to end the war.
He warned supporters that the war with Iran won’t end until after the midterms and that oil prices will also not come down until then.
