Agra: A 28-year-old pregnant woman, allegedly kicked by police personnel who had arrived at her home in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad to arrest her husband in a theft case, died after delivering a baby boy on Monday.
According to the woman’s family, sub-inspector Dharmpal Singh came to arrest Gaurav from his home in Labhaua village, under Shikohabad area, with a police team around 11.45 pm on Sunday.
The family alleged that the woman, identified as Anjali, pleaded with the cops not to take her husband, but Singh shoved her, and she fell down.
Paying no heed to Anjali, police handcuffed Gaurav and took him away. Anjali’s condition deteriorated thereafter, and she was taken to a hospital where she delivered a boy on Monday morning.
Her condition worsened after delivery, and she was shifted to a private hospital in Firozabad where she passed away during treatment, her family said.
The newborn was reported to be in critical condition and referred to a hospital in Agra for further treatment.
After Anjali’s demise, villagers gathered at the police station and protested, questioning the alleged police action that led to the tragedy. Gaurav was released after police was informed about his wife’s death.
Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ravi Shankar Prasad said sub-inspectors Dharmpal Singh and Satyapal Singh, head constables Mohan Singh and Arvind Kumar, and constables Bhavtosh Kumar and Kuldeep Kumar were suspended with immediate effect for negligence.
Anjali’s post-mortem was conducted on Monday night. Her last rites were performed amid heavy police deployment.
