Mumbai: Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed Tamil film ‘Maharaja’ is set to get a Hollywood remake, marking a major milestone for the film.

The development comes days after reports suggested that Matthew McConaughey could headline the Hollywood adaptation.

On Wednesday, the makers of Maharaja officially confirmed the remake through a social media post, putting an end to speculation surrounding the project.

“A HISTORIC MILESTONE! #Maharaja becomes the first Tamil film to be made in Hollywood by a major studio,” they wrote.

The announcement sparked excitement among fans, who welcomed the film’s growing global reach.

“Proud moment of entire team especially director @dir_nithilan Sir and actor @actorvijaysethupathi proud, kollywood forever,” read one comment.

“Only because of director, this milestone happens,” wrote another fan.

According to TOI, producer Sudhan Sundaram revealed that the makers were approached for the remake rights after Maharaja earned ₹91 crore in China.

He also shared that an A-list actor has been attached to the Hollywood adaptation, with production expected to begin next year.

Addressing reports about Matthew McConaughey’s involvement, Sundaram said, “Maybe McConaughey is one of the stars they are talking to, but only the agency will be able to confirm.”

Directed by Nithilan Saminathan and produced by The Route, Think Studios and Passion Studios, Maharaja stars Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam, Mamta Mohandas and others.

Released in June 2024, the neo-noir thriller follows a father who approaches the police over a stolen dustbin named Lakshmi, only for them to discover that his complaint hides a much more serious truth.

According to trade website Sacnilk, Maharaja earned ₹72.43 crore net in India and ₹199.20 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2024.

The film was also widely praised for its gripping storyline and performances by Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap.

Maharaja is currently streaming on Netflix, while Aamir Khan has reportedly acquired the rights for its Hindi remake. Further details about both adaptations are awaited.
