Debagada: In a shocking incident, a young man was allegedly thrashed and set ablaze at his girlfriend’s house in Reamal area of Odisha’s Debagada district.
The deceased has been identified as Silu Ray (28) of Babarakot village.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place on Wednesday night after Silu visited his girlfriend’s house. Following an altercation, the woman’s family members allegedly assaulted and killed him before pouring petrol on his body and setting it on fire.
On being informed by locals, a police team from Reamal rushed to the spot and detained three persons for questioning in connection with the incident.
Sources said Silu had completed his engineering studies and was working with a private organisation in Mumbai. He had returned home from Mumbai only on Wednesday morning.
In the evening, he informed his family that he was going towards Debagada. He later went to meet his girlfriend at her residence near Lakshmi Chhak in Riamal. Family members of the girl spotted him there. A quarrel broke out, following which the family members allegedly attacked Silu, beat him severely until he was bloodied, poured petrol and set him on fire.
Silu’s family alleged that he was burnt alive by the girlfriend’s family while he was still in a critical condition.
Besides detaining three persons, police have sealed the crime scene. Steps were taken for examining the site by a scientific team and dog squad.
Meanwhile, the elder brother of the deceased has lodged a written complaint in connection with the incident at Reamal police station.
