With Jio’s network extending several kilometres offshore, fishermen can now stay in touch with their families and boat owners throughout their voyages.
“Earlier, once we went into the sea, our families had to wait until we returned. Now we can speak to them and know how they are doing,” said Paradip fisherman Harekrushna Mallik, who has spent years navigating unpredictable waters.
The benefits go beyond emotional comfort. Real‑time communication allows crews to update boat owners about their location, fishing conditions, and expected return. For operators like Gyana Ranjan Mohanty, who manages two boats from Paradip, this has streamlined planning.
“Crews can share information about their catch and conditions at sea. We can prepare for their return and arrange ice, labour, packaging and buyers in advance,” Mohanty explained. Timely coordination is crucial, as delays in unloading can affect the quality and market value of fish.
Connectivity has also become a vital safety tool. Alerts about cyclones, depressions, or rough seas can now be relayed instantly, giving crews more time to take precautions. In a region where extreme weather often threatens livelihoods, this digital lifeline is proving indispensable.
Fishing trips typically involve heavy expenses on diesel, food, ice, and drinking water, with boats sometimes travelling hundreds of kilometres in search of a good catch. The ability to stay connected reduces uncertainty, strengthens family ties, and helps safeguard investments.
