Bhubaneswar: Odisha assembly proceedings were disrupted amid uproarious scenes for the third day on Thursday as opposition members intensified their protest against MMDR amendment and school textbook errors.
As soon as the question hour commenced, Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLAs raising these two issues. Congress MLAs protested the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, demanding its withdrawal.
Congress members, staging a unique protest by wearing posters around their necks, trooped into the well of the house and raised slogans near the Speaker’s podium.
Similarly, BJD legislators staged a protest over the MMDR Amendment Act and errors in school textbooks. They have been demanding the resignation of School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond over textbook errors.
Amid ruckus, Deputy Speaker Bhabani Shankar Bhoi adjourned the House till 4 pm after efforts to persuade the opposition members to allow normal proceedings failed.
After the House was adjourned, Congress MLAs staged a demonstration near the statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the Assembly premises, carrying banners and raising their demand for withdrawal of the MMDR Amendment Act.
Holding banners, BJD MLAs marched towards the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) office to stage a protest over the MMDR Amendment Act.
Notably, proceedings of the Odisha Assembly have remained disrupted since the opening day of the monsoon session on Tuesday amid ruckus by opposition BJD and Congress.
