Washington: US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the federal government will now call artificial intelligence “Super Intelligence” (SI), arguing the technology is “much bigger than the internet.”
The announcement came during a White House luncheon with top tech executives, including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
Trump said the new name would be used in all official government communications. He signed an executive order called “Inaugurating The Era Of Super Intelligence”, ordering the executive branch to substitute “Super Intelligence” and “SI” for “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” as far as the law allows.
Why ‘Super Intelligence’ Instead Of AI?
Trump described the technology as the “biggest thing there is, maybe the biggest thing there’s ever been”.
“It’s much bigger than the internet,” he said.
Under the order, federal departments and agencies must adopt the new terminology in official correspondence, public statements, policy documents and other non-statutory materials where applicable, as reported by Business Standard.
The directive also tasks the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, working with other agencies, to submit proposed legislative language within 60 days to create a federal definition of “Super Intelligence” and “SI”.
“The terminology should reflect the transformative capabilities of these technologies and the limitless opportunities they create for the American people,” the order states.
“Accordingly, the term ‘Super Intelligence’ more appropriately captures the promise, potential, and rapidly advancing capabilities of these technologies.”
What’s In The Voluntary AI Safety Pact?
At the same meeting, Trump said several leading AI companies had signed a morally binding—but not legally enforceable—commitment to strengthen safeguards around the fast-evolving technology.
“They’re going to police themselves,” Trump said, calling it a pledge by tech firms to put safety measures in place as AI systems grow more powerful.
The agreement, titled White House Accord on Super Intelligence: Joint Commitment on Frontier Responsibilities, says developers of advanced AI models should adopt four layers of safeguards and audits to build public confidence.
The proposed steps include: Monitoring AI models during training and deployment for risks tied to cybersecurity, biosecurity and chemical threats; assigning internal teams to ensure safeguards work as intended; hiring independent external auditors to assess those controls and; setting up independent board committees to oversee the process and make sure identified problems are fixed
Participating companies are also expected to meet regularly to agree on common standards and best practices.
The agreement does not rule out the possibility that some of its provisions could later be enacted as law or regulation, but the pact itself is voluntary and carries no legal force.
Industry Reaction
Commenting on the pact, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the commitment was meant to reassure customers that AI systems would operate as intended.
He described the accord as a starting point for developing industry-wide safety standards.
