Kataka: A patient undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Kataka died under mysterious circumstances, with his family alleging that he was beaten to death by security personnel and an attendant.
The deceased, a who hailed from Jajpur district, had reportedly been admitted to the hospital two days ago for treatment. Following his death, his family alleged that he had suffered multiple injuries and that there were marks of assault on his body.
The family members further alleged that the patient was beaten with a plastic pipe by a security guard and an attendant.
Following the assault, the condition of the patient deteriorated, and he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment on Wednesday.
The deceased’s brother has sought strict legal action against those responsible. He has also urged police to identify and question the security guards, supervisors and hospital staff who were on duty when the incident occurred.
The complaint further sought preservation and seizure of CCTV footage from the hospital’s entry and exit points, corridors and other relevant areas. It also requested seizure of medical records, recording of eyewitness statements and a post-mortem examination by a government medical board to establish the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of the SCB Medical College and Hospital said there was no justification for assaulting anyone inside a medical institution and assured that the hospital authorities would extend all necessary cooperation to the police during the investigation.
The family of the deceased approached the Mangalabag police station and lodged a complaint. Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.
