Bhubaneswar: The official X account of the Bhubaneswar-Kataka Commissionerate Police has reportedly been hacked, raising concerns over the cyber security of the police force’s social media platforms.
It was not clear whether the account, reported to have been compromised on Monday, has been restored and if the Commissionerate Police has regained control of the official social media handle.
According to police sources, unauthorised posts promoting a cryptocurrency airdrop appeared on the handle before the account was suspended.
The X account had reportedly been inaccessible or under unauthorised control for approximately 16 hours.
Authorities are treating the incident as a cybersecurity breach and are working to regain full control of the account and prevent further misuse.
The Commissionerate Police uses its social media platforms to share public advisories, crime updates and community policing information. The appearance of crypto-related promotional content on an official law-enforcement handle has raised concerns about the security of government social media accounts.
The incident has raised questions about the cyber security measures in place to protect the social media accounts of law enforcement agencies.
Regaining control of the compromised account and securing it against further unauthorised access are now key priorities.
Details about those responsible for the alleged hacking are yet to be established. Further details on the investigation or restoration of the account are awaited.
