Odisha Zoo Loses Jumbo ‘Chandan’
Bhubaneswar: ‘Chandan’, a male elephant and an inmate of Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the outskirts of the city, died on Sunday.
According to zoo authorities, the 10-year-old tusker suddenly fell ill on September 13.
He suffered a reduced appetite, nasal discharge and swollen glands on his face. Zoo veterinarians started treating the elephant on the advice of Centre for Wildlife Health, OUAT, Bhubaneswar.
However, ‘Chandan’ succumbed to his illness around 3.40 AM.
It is being suspected that the jumbo died of herpes virus infection. The exact cause of the death of the animal will be revealed after the postmortem, the authorities added.
With the death of ‘Chandan‘, Nandankana is now left with just six female jumbos.
