Bhubaneswar: Condolences poured in as India woke up to disheartening news of having lost the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who succumbed while undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday. With 30,000 songs in 14 Indian languages, she is the most recorded voice in history.Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in IndoreShe was born in 1929 as Hema to a Marathi musician and theatre actor Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar. Her name was later changed to Lata, inspired by a character named Latika from her father’s play.Lata began her career at the age of 13 with Marathi movie ‘Kiti Hasaal’ (1942). She moved to Mumbai in 1945. She also acted in plays for her father when she was 5 years old.Lata Mangeshkar first tasted success with her song “Aayega Aanewaala” in Mahal (1949). Her first National Award came for the songs in the movie- ‘Parichay’.O.P. Nayyar found Lata’s voice too thin, too shrill, which did not suit his compositions.
