Mumbai: Amid criticism over sensual scenes in its promotional material, Yash defended ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’, saying director Geetu Mohandas brings a distinct “female gaze” to the film.
Speaking on the sidelines of CinemaCon, Yash, who is also a producer, maintained that Geetu’s perspective adds a unique dimension to the action drama and also highlighted how working with her differed from collaborating with male directors.
During the event, American content creator and host Sabeen Faheem noted that it is rare to see a woman filmmaker like Geetu directing a large-scale action film such as ‘Toxic’.
Yash agreed. “That’s the most exciting part. So what happens is that when you generally say action films, it’s only restricted to male directors. That’s been historically (true) in India. A lot of people have done that. A large-scale action film, that too a gangster film with a female gaze, is something which is very new and refreshing.”
The actor added, “Thoughts are very clear, and she has a strong conviction in whatever she does. And she’s a fabulous writer. I could learn so much, you know. The desire quotient or certain emotions, romance or sensuality, how a female can show, a woman can present is entirely different is what I’ve realised in this journey.”

Geetu has been open about portraying sensuality in ‘Toxic’ from the outset.
In a ‘birthday peek’ released in January 2025, Yash is seen entering a casino with women dancing in glittery outfits and fishnet stockings.
The clip also features a moment where a woman sits on him as he pours liquor on her.
While this glimpse did not spark much controversy, the sensual visuals in the ‘Introducing Raya’ video released this year drew stronger reactions.
A particular scene involving a bomb, a car, and a cemetery came under scrutiny, with many on the internet criticising it.
The National Christian Federation also filed a formal complaint, citing that sentiments were hurt.
After backlash, Geetu addressed the controversy with a cryptic Insta post. “Chilling while people figure out female pleasure, consent, women playing systems, etc etc.”
‘Toxic’ was initially set for a March 19 release alongside ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’, but delayed due to the West Asia conflict. It is now scheduled for release on June 4.
