Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Thursday uncovered deposits, totalling Rs 1.85 crore, during raids on Executive Engineer (Quality) in Circle-I of TPCODL, Bhubaneswar, Tusharkant Ray, caught taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from an electrical contractor earlier in the day.
As per a statement issued by the Vigilance Directorate, Ray had repeatedly demanded the bribe for furnishing a final inspection report in favour of the contractor for supply of electricity to the transformer of an apartment building installed by him.
After the contractor approached the Vigilance, a trap was laid and Ray was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe at a park near his residence. The entire amount was recovered from his possession and seized.
Following the successful operation, simultaneous searches were conducted at three locations, which led to the seizure of an additional Rs 9,53,200 in cash from his rented residential building at Sailashree Vihar here.
“Apart form seizure of the cash, deposits to the tune of Rs 1.85 crore across postal, bank and other savings accounts were detected during verification. The cash deposits are suspected to have been made from ill-gotten bribe money,” the statement said.
It added that the Executive Engineer has bee arrested and forwarded to the court.
A case has been registered against him under the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, and an investigation is underway to uncover further details about his alleged corrupt practices.
