Malkangiri: As a low-pressure area over Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger very heavy rain in South Odisha, the Malkangiri administration on Thursday announced closure of all schools in the district on September 26.
“There has been continuous rainfall in various parts of this district leading to a situation, which may be difficult for young children to navigate. Therefore, to avoid any untoward situation and keeping the safety of the children in mind, all government, aided, and private schools will remain closed,” Collector Somesh Kumar Upadhyay said in an office order.
However, headmasters, teachers, and other staff members have been directed to remain present in their respective institutions.
According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area formed over central parts of north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal at 5.30 pm on Thursday. “It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts on September 26 and cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts the following morning.
The weather agency has issued an orange warning of heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph at one or two places in Malkangiri and Koraput districts on September 26.
Heavy rain along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may continue in these districts the following day.
